Masts are out!

Well we left the marina in crappy weather this morning; 20kt easterly and raining.

Everybody will be overjoyed to know that the new regulator and alternator and all the new wiring worked beautifully. It’s a pity the cranking battery is cactus… Matt Orbell, from Green Marine is looking into it tomorrow.

The masts were out by lunchtime. They are now in the dinghy shed over here at the Bellerieve Yacht Club. We are tied up here now, underneath the crane on the main jetty.

The boat seems odd without masts and rigging, that’s for sure. See the shots firstly of her sans booms, and then finally mastless!

The masts are in good nick. There’s some bubbly paint in patches, and the paint is all pretty chalky. We are going to sand and paint them. There’s some old (AC extension cord!) wiring in a channel I can’t get out, so we are going to clip it short and leave it there.

There was a bird nest in the main mast! It must have been from so time ago, it had rotted down and fallen to the base on the inside. It was a odd pile of leaves and potting mix by the time we lifted the mast away.

We have just got back from Bunnings with some 32mm electrical conduit to run all the new electrical wiring in. Kids had fun playing spies in all the aisles… Kept the staff entertained.

Farewell shin-dig

We had a bit of seafood and wine thrown together to say farewell to some of our friends at the marina.

It was really great to see everyone, and so many people gave us the good wishes for the future. It was really nice.

Getting the job list down now…

It’s getting down to the wire now…. We leave the marina in two days to pull the masts and fit the mast based equipment.

The sea strainer went on today, Replumbed the diesel feed for the engine to make room. The new VHF is in, with the second station mounted in the cockpit and all working. Word of warning; when Standard Horizon say the remote can be cut to length, they don’t say how tedious it is to rejoin. The many wires in that cable are tiny!

I have plumbed an ignition feed from the start switch to a switch to allow me to choose between the internal regulator in the 6-series Balmar alternator and the smart external regulator (a Balmar MC-612-Dual).

Oddly, the regulator doesn’t fire up when it’s got a positive on the ignition wire. I have just read through the instruction manual and will trouble-shoot that tomorrow.

The engine has been serviced and runs a treat, so this regulator problem is the only thing left to sort out before the engine is a going concern again.

The stuff we got made from Dynamic Welding is here… The wind generator mount looks particularly good, and the wind generator has arrived from the UK, so I’m looking forward to fitting it and getting it working.

A week before we leave

So somebody asked me this morning if was excited about leaving….

Excited!? The concept was so far from my current mental state right now it took my a few seconds to understand!

Planning, fretting, organizing, fitting, fixing and buying all sorts of stuff, yes. Excited? No.

I’ll be glad when we leave, then what’s done is done and I’ll make do with what I have. By then I expect to be relieved, then hopefully relaxed!

Welcome to Decks Awash!

Welcome to the chronicle of the adventures, trials and tribulations of the crew of the good ship ERIK.

Depending on your viewpoint, we have been preparing for this cruise for the last three weeks, four years or a decade.

Three weeks ago my role at the company I worked for became redundant. The pay out was enough to pay out our boat and leave enough cash to buy some stuff we thought we needed with enough left over to go cruising. Four years ago we borrowed money to buy this fine vessel with the aim of have her as a cruising home for our family. A decade ago, after living aboard a couple of boats we found we preferred it to life ashore and the desire to cruising was born.

We’ll be updating this site as regularly as possible as our journey unfolds…
